The Brief: Illustrate a children’s picture book written by Ritu Kumar that follows Diya, a princess with a very picky appetite, and a Dragon who happens to share that same pickiness.
The Problem: The author, an internal medicine doctor with a passion for children’s nutrition, needed to weave an educational lesson about trying new foods into a magical fairytale setting. She also wanted the two main characters to be loving, culturally resonant representations of her own two daughters. The creative challenge was to seamlessly blend traditional fairytale tropes with a distinct South Asian flair, balancing the nutritional message so it felt fun and inviting rather than preachy.
The Solution: I pulled inspiration from traditional South Asian patterns and clothing to give the royal setting a rich, culturally authentic aesthetic. For the characters, I focused on translating the personality of the author's daughters into the designs of the princess and the dragon. I used vibrant, appetizing colors for the food illustrations so that they were appealing to young readers, reinforcing the book's positive message about nutrition.
The Impact:The book has been met with fantastic commercial and community success. It is selling incredibly well, receiving glowing feedback from parents, and becoming a beloved resource frequently used in daycares, libraries, and early childhood facilities.
