The Brief: Illustrate a children’s picture book written by Corey Ross centered around Jack, a bat who struggles with ADHD and feeling different amongst his classmates.
The Problem: The client came to me after a devastating experience where a previous illustrator took his investment and disappeared, leaving him with lost time and broken trust. Beyond repairing that client-artist relationship through transparent communication, the creative challenge was to represent ADHD visually in a way that felt relatable, compassionate, and accurate to a young audience without making the scenes feel chaotic or overwhelming.
The Solution: To re-build Corey's trust, I maintained a highly collaborative workflow with frequent milestone updates. Visually, I developed an endearing, vibrant purple bat named Jack to give him instant shelf appeal and make him a highly lovable protagonist. I used expressive character posing and intentional background elements to subtly illustrate Jack's internal distractions, ensuring the emotional heart of the story resonated clearly in every scene.
The Impact:By fostering a transparent, reliable partnership, I successfully restored the client’s confidence in the publishing process. We delivered a beautiful, polished final book that Corey is incredibly proud of, resulting in a standout product ready to make a meaningful difference for children with ADHD.
