The Brief: Format and type-set an adult mystery thriller for an established author transitioning from traditional publishing to independent self-publishing.
The Problem: The author’s previous traditional publisher was no longer taking on new work, forcing her to take the third installment of her series into her own hands. The major hurdle was preserving the premium, traditional publishing aesthetic her existing readers expected, while adapting the entire file structure and interior layout constraints specifically for modern Print-on-Demand (POD) self-publishing platforms.
The Solution: I carefully analyzed the typesetting, font metrics, and page layouts of her traditionally published previous novels to replicate that exact reading experience. I built a custom interior template focusing on chapter header headers and classic, highly readable body typography. Every margin and gutter was mathematically optimized to fit the specific mechanical tolerances of self-publishing printers, ensuring no text would get swallowed by the spine or print unaligned.
The Impact:The project empowered the author to seamlessly launch her own independent publishing company. The final book looks identical in quality to her traditional house releases, proving that self-published fiction can absolutely rival big-five publishing standards on a bookshelf.
